Laminate Flooring Project – Shriners Neighborhood, Lexington KY

Project Overview

We recently completed a laminate flooring installation in a classic ranch-style home located in the Shriners neighborhood of Lexington, KY. Known for its well-kept mid-century homes and peaceful streets, Shriners is a popular spot for homeowners looking to maintain character while upgrading for comfort and functionality. In this project, the goal was to create a cohesive flooring design across three interconnected spaces – living room, dining room, and family room – using durable laminate that could handle pets, grandkids, and daily activity.

Customer Challenge

The house had a patchwork of flooring styles. The original hardwood in the living room was worn down, the dining area had outdated parquet, and the family room addition featured a completely different wood tone. This mix disrupted the flow of the open floor plan. The homeowners wanted a unified, traditional look that didn’t require complicated hardwood refinishing. Durability and ease of maintenance were also top priorities, especially with frequent visits from young children and a large dog. The flooring needed to feel like a natural fit in a 1970s ranch home without raising the floor height or causing transition issues between rooms.

Our Solution

We recommended a medium oak-tone laminate with a lightly textured surface that replicates traditional hardwood. This finish complemented the home’s décor and the neighborhood’s aesthetic, providing the warmth of wood without the upkeep. We began by carefully removing all existing floor coverings while protecting trim and cabinetry.
To address different subfloor materials, wood in the original rooms and concrete in the family room, we installed appropriate underlayments for moisture control and level support. The click-lock laminate planks installed seamlessly across 800 square feet, eliminating thresholds and creating a smooth, continuous surface.

We undercut door frames for a flush fit and finished the installation with matching quarter-round trim. The flooring height stayed within a safe margin, so there were no clearance issues with doors or existing fixtures.

The project also eliminated the creaks and unevenness of the old patchwork flooring.
