Vinyl Flooring Upgrade Brings Comfort and Style to a Shriners Basement
Project Overview
We recently completed a vinyl plank flooring installation in a mid-century ranch-style home in the Shriners neighborhood of Lexington, KY. This home had a large, partially finished basement with painted concrete floors, and the homeowners wanted a more comfortable and polished space for storage, hobbies, and a play area for the grandkids. They chose luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring for its durability, moisture resistance, and upscale look an ideal match for this classic Shriners property.
Customer Challenge
The basement floor was painted concrete, cold underfoot, uninviting, and slick when humid. Like many homes in this neighborhood, moisture in the basement was a concern, and carpet was out of the question. The homeowners needed a flooring solution that was water-resistant, easy to maintain, and could handle the occasional foot traffic, spills, and uneven slab. They also wanted a flooring option that added comfort and value while blending with their home’s traditional aesthetic. Adding to the challenge was a slightly uneven slab with a few hairline cracks and a shallow dip in one area.
Our Approach
We recommended a rigid core LVP with an attached pad to address comfort, minor floor irregularities, and moisture. The homeowners selected a light oak-look finish to brighten the space.
Our process included:
-
Surface prep: Cleaning the slab and grinding down high points.
-
Moisture barrier: Installing a vapor sheet as added protection beneath the LVP.
-
Vinyl flooring installation: Floating planks in a staggered pattern across 600 sq. ft., working around posts and closets with precision cuts.
-
Smooth transitions: Adding a stair nose trim at the foot of the staircase to neatly finish the edge.
-
Finishing touches: Installing white quarter-round trim along the basement walls for a clean, polished look.
The entire installation was completed in just two days.
Results
Basement remodel in Shriners, Lexington KY using luxury vinyl plank to replace painted concrete, adding warmth, comfort, and water resistance.
The once cold, bare basement now feels like a cozy extension of the home. The vinyl flooring is soft underfoot, easy to clean, and helps reduce sound and chill, making it perfect for a kids’ playroom and family use. The light wood-look finish adds warmth and style, and the floor’s performance has been excellent.
Even when minor moisture appears after heavy rain, the homeowners simply wipe it away without concern. The rigid core vinyl provides stability over the minor dip, and the basement now feels significantly more livable. The family placed rugs in a few areas for added comfort, and they’ve commented on how the vinyl flooring transformed the entire space without needing a full remodel.
This project shows how a simple flooring upgrade can turn underused space into a functional, beautiful part of a Shriners home, all while staying budget-friendly and moisture-resistant.
